Participation in the scientific and practical conference “Cultural and historical heritage of the Arctic. Settlements of the Russian presence in the focus of scientific attention”

On March 15, a scientific and practical conference “Cultural and historical heritage of the Arctic” was held in Murmansk on the nuclear icebreaker Lenin in the hall of the ICAE. Settlements of the Russian presence in the focus of scientific attention”, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the settlement of the Russian presence of Barentsburg. The event was organized by the Museum and Exhibition Center of the Federal State Unitary Enterprise “State Trust “Arktikugol” with the support of the Murmansk Regional Branch of the Russian Geographical Society, the Murmansk Marine Biological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Information Center for Atomic Energy in Murmansk.

Representatives of regional organizations operating in Barentsburg spoke at the conference: Murmansk Department of Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring, Murmansk Marine Biological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Polar Geophysical Institute, Polar Alpine Botanical Garden-Institute of the KSC RAS, Kola branch of the Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The Polar Geophysical Institute was represented at the event by Evgeny Milichenko, Assistant Director of the PGI. In his report “Scientific research of the Polar Geophysical Institute in the Svalbard Archipelago”, he spoke about the main tasks of the PGI activities in Svalbard and presented the most interesting results of the work of the Institute’s researchers in the archipelago.

Elena Skiotis, Assistant Director for International Cooperation at the PGI, was invited to moderate the event.
